I'm torn because I have a start9 and can self host vaultwarden, but proton looks really pretty.

Just make sure you have a solid backup. The hardware will fail, it is a question of when, not if :-) VaultWarden is BitWarden opensource so good choice there.
I have both (proton and BW) just in case and hard backup as well...
