MLB just dropped the hammer on Marcano
It appears this legalization of sports betting is getting players caught up. I’m still torn on this because of someone is dogging it trying to point shave or determine an outcome it is easily seen with all the camera and video we have today but on the flip side it can screw up the incentive to play clean.
Even with earnings up for athletes greed is still king to the point they risk it all for just a few extra thousand bucks.
I expect more of these. Every league is so intertwined with gambling now. For some of these guys the allure will be too great.

i find it disturbing how intertwined gambling is throughout media these days. I wasn’t on board when they banned online poker back in the day but now things have gotten 100x worse. I guess you just have to buy a couple of politicians to open the floodgates. this can’t be good for society.

It would certainly be nice to go back to a time when they weren’t giving me betting lines during a game.

I like the days where everyone had to use an online book in the Caribbean. I still do!
MyBookie.ag
Until they close or cut off USA access
Pinnacle is a good sports book but no USA.
reply
Aww yeah I remember them!!

How is mybookie? I often hear it advertised on the 49ers podcast I listen to.

I like it because I can deposit and withdraw bitcoin. On chain ⛓️‍💥 not lightning ⚡️
Betting is dollars only.
They have contests such as a football survivor pool and 18 week beat the spread super contest.
Odds are competitive for spread and money line.
I discovered it a few years ago listening to a football podcast also. I think it was the Ringer with Kevin Clark who is now at ESPN
5 dimes was great because they charged 5 percent not 10. But they shut down completely which is why I moved to my bookie AG

I will check them out.

I wonder if the leagues could get around this issue by building incentives directly into contracts that benefit players for hitting their overs and their team's overs.
reply
But Vegas always have the other side of the bet. If the overs are minus money on the ML then it’s a huge incentive to hit the under and come out ahead anyway
reply
That’s true, but they’d have to bet enough to make it worth while and betting that much would increase their odds of getting caught.
reply
I think the issue there is that the teams themselves are supposed to avoid being involved in gambling (you know, other than running Draftkings ads).
reply
That’s right. I’m just thinking that this is an incentive problem. If playing well paid better than taking a dive, then they would do that.
The NBA already lets media members vote on awards that determine player salaries. Letting the sports books have a role would be bad optics, but at least they actually pay attention.
reply
True. And at least considering that might get them to also start thinking about other ways to incentivize the players to not gamble.
reply
Interesting idea

Lucas Pacqueta a football player from English football club West Ham United is also found guilty of violating betting rules. Reports are he could be facing a life ban.

I think this is not new, there has always been this type of corruption in sports, of all kinds, the detail is that when someone is discovered, media noise is made.
reply
There have been scandals in Latvia about this. I think it's ok, when you bet on just your team winning, not ok when you start betting on number of goals or yourself losing and stuff like that.
reply
Who are the type of people who are gambling? Are they they higher earners or the lower earners?
reply
I think it’s the mid to lower tier players. Plus they get caught proxy betting
reply
I dont think it is right. Unless they are betting to win.
reply
Yeah but most of these leagues don’t care about winning! It’s always about the cash
