The GPL was not intended to prevent people from selling their software. You can sell your software, you can even send the source code to the software AFTER it is paid for (however, when people contribute to the code base you're selling for free, they will often be upset by this)
I think FOSS is confused by the majority as "ohhh, Free Software?" sign me up. I agree, people should pay even $1, which can fund libreOffice, Opensats, LinuxFoundation, sessions, Krita etc. Even some people that private host on invidious, it's not a software but does take up resources. Compared to Evil Google.
