If you are into some linguistic adventures, try to learn and study Russian or Polish, that will make you appreciate the "simplicity" of English :-) Maybe that's why is so popular.
Anyway, after speaking a few language one often comes to a conclusion that these are "interpreters" of words and ideas (just like a shebang line in programming) and that, as you pointed out, there is a lot of "borrowing" going on.
A bit random, but I was captivated by your use of “shebang”. I have never really come across anyone use it before. Have parked it in my mental folder n am eager to use it at the earliest opportunity
