The really exciting news here is Lightning Node Connect which allows applications to interact with self-custodial nodes without the user painfully copying all the values required for authorized access.

Can you explain what this changes for the wider LN ecosystem for a smooth brain lizard like me?

Basically, the UX for linking a service like SN (or lightning terminal) to a node you run yourself is much improved. Right now, SN is custodial because the UX around linking to a home node is very complicated, but with LNC it is much smoother.
Linking to a home node will likely be a power user thing for a long time, but this is a huge step in the right direction.
