America in its founding and continued existence is progressive in the literal, not political sense. I think this makes conservatism impossible.
I'm not sure if it's impossible, but I agree that it's at least a very fine needle to thread.
I'd say American conservatives should pretty much be libertarians who also uphold conventional virtues, without seeking to enforce them through the state.

Yeah, but they don't. I left the R party years ago, because of the hypocrisy.
