Hello fellow stackers, @didiplaywell and I are organizing an Go tournament for Stacker News on OGS.
The tournament is hosted in our new (unofficial) Stacker News group on OGS. Please post your OGS username below to recieve an invitation. Note that you must be a member of the group in order to join the tournament.
Additionally, we are looking to have a bounty for the tournament winner. @didiplaywell and I already have put in 1000 sats for the winner. Let us know if you'd like to add to that.
We hope you enjoy! Onegaishimasu!
P.S. We have not yet decided on the tournament details such as start time and type. Let us know your preferences in the comments.
So far I have @grayruby, @freebookspls, @didiplaywell and myself interested. When would be a good time for you guys to start and what type of tournament would you like to play?
Is there anybody else interested?
reply
I said I am interested in learning. I haven't even begun my Go journey. I don't think I will be a viable competitor for this one.
reply
Ah, fair enough! Best wishes for your studies!
reply
A correspondence swiss tournament would be ideal, I think.
reply
How does starting on Saturday work for you, @freebookspls and @didiplaywell?
reply
Hello! :) I'm not going to be available this weekend, but I can start next one!
reply
OK, so @freebookspls, does next Saturday work for you?
reply
sorry, guys. I've been swamped at work. Next saturday works for everyone?
reply
In my case yes! :)
reply
OK, I'll make a tournament scheduled to start on the 22nd. Since we only have 3 people (AFAIK), do you people like the idea of doing a simultaneous round robin instead of a Swiss?
Cool idea. I don't know how to play but I hope this tournament goes well and we can do other thing similar in the future. I was thinking about an SN poker tournament at some point.
reply
I'd be interested in playing in a poker tournament. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for it.
reply
Thank you :) Would you be interested to learn?
reply
Yes I would. I did watch the AlphaGo documentary but I don't really understand the rules.
reply
Cool! :) Please see this post I made for beginners: Zapping feels like playing Go! . It contains all needed hyperlinks, but for a very first time, I suggested this video in a comment.
reply
Great. I previously read your post but I will read it again and watch the video.
reply
Perfect! In any case, you have me and MarsIronPI both here and on OGS, to make some training :)
reply
Much appreciated.
reply
Also check out the manga Hikaru no Go. It caused me to experience a positive feedback loop of reading the manga and wanting to play go, and playing go and wanting to read Hikaru no Go.
reply
Count me in! My user is freebookspls
reply
I just invited you to the group. Thanks for joining.
reply
Cool! Glad to have you on board! :) We where thinking about making two levels, one for beginners and other for more experimented players, so to not be unfair with the prize distribution.
reply
I ain't got time for games, especially that one!
reply
You genuinely don't have to, we are offering this to the ones interested, not trying to force the ones not interested. But besides that, this is also a little bit more than just a game for us, for it's mechanics make it more of a meditation session, to practice patience, discipline, and awareness.
reply
So go be a zen master and meditate? Don't need a go game for that. What you really want is competition and amusement and to win. That is grasping.
reply
Have it your way ¯_(ツ)_/¯
reply
There is a difference between "my way" and the way.
reply
Then, have it your way ¯_(ツ)_/¯
reply
Fair enough, although for correspondence games usually it's on the order of 10 minutes a day.
reply
Ten minutes a day adds up. I reserve that for Bible reading.
reply
As I said, that's fair.
reply
Thank you for the initiative on this idea! :D
reply
You're welcome!
