I personally have never used this feature but based on the discussion on their forum it seems that you need to have Vanilla Google OS to enable that feature:

Those apps are most likely checking if the OS on your phone is running a Google Certified OS, which GrapheneOS isn't.

I don't know for you but for me paying with my phone is really a crucial feature which I cannot give up..

Fair enough, I don't know too much about that feature as I have never used it and probably never will.
I don't think any non-google OS supports that though. If they do, GrapheneOS would support it.
