I'm curious about what makes people decide to add or remove a relay from their list. I want to open a discussion with other Nostr users to gather insights and understand how better incentives can be created to improve the overall experience with relays in the Nostr network.
Any feedback at all is helpful!
What aspects of a Nostr relay do you find most valuable?
  • Are you drawn to specific topics and communities it supports?
  • Are you hoping to connect with like-minded individuals or find new follows through the relay?
  • Does relay uptime and efficiency play a role in your choice?
    • Do most users even notice these things?
  • Do features like security/privacy and innovative functionalities play a role in your choice?
    • If so, which ones?
Equally important, what factors lead you to remove a relay from your list?
  • Is it a lack of relevant content, engaging communities, or like-minded people?
  • Are frequent downtimes or slow response times a factor?
  • Does privacy or the country where the relay is hosted influence your decision?
What factors determine if you would pay for a relay service?
  • Does the relay provide a high-quality, reliable connection with minimal downtimes?
  • Are there exclusive features or enhanced functionalities that are worth the cost?
  • Is there a strong community presence or specific topics that are highly engaging?
  • Does note retention play a factor?
  • What is your preferred model of payment?
    • A subscription?
    • Pay per # of posts?
    • Pay for long term note storage?
    • Pay to include or avoid certain types of content?
I am imagining a day where every 10th person who uses Noster has their own private relay. I would hope that very soon we get to the point where it’s normal for people to spin up their own relays.
I’m hoping that we no longer have to manage relay lists at all.
Perhaps along with sharing a public key you also share details about connecting to your private relay… all in one QR/URI.
Otherwise nostr isn’t very decentralized… and it kinda defeats the purpose.
I’m also hoping that my at-home private relay will periodically reach out to stay up-to-date with who I’m following and allow my mobile phone to connect to it to get updates. Also it will also use locally run AI for moderation so that it could be customized to show me or hide from me whatever I ask.
I think we’re a ways off from this…
