Bitcoin has a few things going for it over gold.
- Easy to develop a liquid global market for transactions in actual Bitcoin. Much harder with physical gold.
- Easier to verify actual Bitcoin ownership vs actual gold ownership. Harder to "print" paper Bitcoin because of this
