Bitcoin has a few things going for it over gold.

Easy to develop a liquid global market for transactions in actual Bitcoin. Much harder with physical gold.

Easier to verify actual Bitcoin ownership vs actual gold ownership. Harder to "print" paper Bitcoin because of this
