The great podcast of Everything Everywhere Daily did a brief on how Canadian Football got started. Very interesting facts here. One thing I didn’t know is that they expanded into the USA and how the grey cup was actually kept by the champion. One year the team (I think from Montreal?) didn’t give up the cup because they weren’t beat on the field.
Lol shoutout to my SN Canadians @grayruby and @kr
Other cool facts -The Canadian football field is much bigger than the NFL field -The CFL puts a quota on American born players to allow roster spots for Canadians -They use 12 players on the field vs 11 the NFL uses thus no need for Tight ends
Cool pod give it a listen if you have time
CFL is fun to watch. Due to the size of the field and the fact that the DLine must line up 1 yard back from line of scrimmage there is usually a lot of action and scoring even though there are only 3 downs.
The CFL had a few years where they expanded into the US. US teams that played in CFL were:
  • Sacramento Gold Miners
  • Las Vegas Posse
  • Baltimore Stallions (won a Grey Cup)
  • Shreveport Pirates
  • San Antonio Texans
  • Birmingham Barracudas
I don't know the story about Montreal keeping the Cup. I need to look that up.
