I’ve seen some threads recently with discussion around new features that SN should add.
Some of the ideas are great, and I’m all in favor of adding new features that make the site better.
I’m also in favor of eliminating features to make the site better, and the latter rarely gets talked about.
I think SN is still pretty simple, but removing features can be just as important to prevent the site from becoming bloated or cluttered over time.
Wanted to create a thread to hear about features or aspects of the site you’d like to see removed.
If your answer is “nothing”, which features should SN never add to the site?
This is a bit controversial and it doesn't fit 100% the scope of the thread, but remove free nym changes and remove free LN adresses etc. Make them cost a little sats. This way we can build up our profiles over time as we stack sats and it could be a monetization angle for the longer term :) I think users will mind when they hear the suggestion but I think if it's implemented it will feel quite natural

I agree

Overall the site is doing pretty good being minimalistic... Just couple thoughts up for consideration:
  • Remove emojis from post names
  • If the markdown editor would be WYSIWYG, then you can remove "preview" :)
  • Remove the price of bitcoin on top (not a strong opinion)
  • Remove "invites" (not sure if at this point those are being used & useful)
reply
I enjoy the stats per $ view, it has made reasoning about Bitcoin's price more Intuitive and it is more Bitcoin centric than displaying the $ price.
reply
I think price matters when you are spending bitcoin. It's good to know how many sats in a dollar. I like that it can be displayed that way.
reply
agree with all of the above.
i think there are opportunities to re-design the invites system, but right now it isn’t super useful.

I think SN should remove emojis and exclamation points from post titles.
Emojis make the main page look cluttered, and exclamation points are almost exclusively used to shout or yell.
I think this will make for a main page that is easier and more enjoyable to read.

or perhaps make it very expensive?
reply
fees could definitely deter people from using those tools, but using money to shape this kind of behavior seems crude.
to me, exclamation points feel useless in all titles… why complicate the matter with monetary incentives?

emojis in comment threads make sense 💯

Remove the bitcoin price in USD featured in the header of the site. USD is irrelevant... at least in my bitcoin maxi psycho mind!
reply
Very much disagree with this. USD is very relevant. It really bugs me all the people that say "1 sat = 1 sat". That's meaningless and blindly idealistic. No matter how you slice it, the exchange rate of BTC to USD determines everything. Don't agree? Alright then how about I hire you for 1 sat an hour? Oh not high enough for you? Why not? Is it because in order to buy things to sustain yourself you need more than that per hour? Why is that? Oh is it because things cost fiat money and 1 sat doesn't get you a lot of fiat money?
reply
I like it as well. Probably more efficient ways to check sats/USD but SN has become my go to place to check the price.

"SN has become my go to place to check the price" - same.
might be complex to impliment, and need to keep loading the site fast, but if fiat is a thing, would be good to have reference to different currencies / counter-values.
Maybe not practical to have all. I'd like to see:
USD - as many places accept it IMF Special Drawing Rights - would be interesting to compare Salvadoran colón - well, no need for explanation
Or strip it out, replace with block height
reply
If fiat mattered, I wouldn't spend as much time on this site. But when I see I've been tipped sats, it makes me want to contribute more to the site even though I've received less than $0.01 for a post/comment. I'm contributing as if I was in the future where Bitcoin is the global measuring tool for value. SN is my portal for stepping into the future. Having USD in the header is a thorn in the mind. Either way, @k00b has his finger on the pulse! May the best argument win!
reply
I agree with you on this., but I think 1 sat = 1 sat is making the point that 1 sat always represents the same fraction of the final total supply. Until the tail emissions crowd gets their way...
reply
Current block time would be cool instead.

Just click on it. It has 3 modes, the last being "1 sat = 1 sat".
reply
Fiat has relevance, but still I agree the price in the header is not necessary.

Ask this once a year.

Please remove the lightning animation. It is distracting and is aesthetically unappealing.

I love that animation! Lol

That sounds like the perfect case for settings

Making things "easy" for the lazy was how yahoo turned a useful discussion medium into what later became facebook etc. If people have to do a little effort to learn how to post they tend to have a little more respect. The markdown editor is a tiny little impediment that may prevent the slide into mindless bullshit.
reply
I don't think spending time and resources on removing things is worthwhile, only to add a larger cost to it, if not, then having a polished front end and a more experimental front end could solve it and people can choose the one they prefer

SN is minimalistic as is. I think more should be added.
