I'm not sure which is worse; having accidentally thrown them away, or having actually had that many one time but spent them all on stupid crap and/or lost them all gambling.  At least if you threw them away, there is still a slight hope that someday they will be found.  If you gambled them all away, they're truly gone forever.

I vaguely recall hearing this story before. 
I think it would give me lifelong depression.
