Listened to this on my way into work today. Really fascinating overview of the history of Chinese science fiction and the current state of their industry.

I read this trilogy a few years ago. The level of criticism of the Chinese government that was tolerated in the books exceeded my expectations.
I'll give this a listen. Thank you.

One of the things the person being interviewed notes is that the author wanted the Cultural Revolution stuff to be the opening scene in the first book, but his publishers (and possibly the government) required it be buried later, which I guess blunted some of that. The TV series puts it right at the start.

I haven't seen the tv series yet (looks like it's going to be awesome), but the American copy of the book puts it up front as well. It's such a traumatic opening. I almost didn't read on thinking the whole thing was going to be non-stop horror. So glad I did. It really establishes the philosophical outlook of Ye Wenjie.
