I dont get this idea of storing useless stuff on the blockchain. Wont it just make it more data to process in the future? Isnt this actually a disservice to ourselves later on?

Exactly.
This nonsense I call techno-blockchain-blabla, a classic technique used in the times of shitcoins to facilitate the selling of them, now repeated in these times that bitcoin has regained status, but with the bitcoin blockchain as their main selling convincing point.
It won't work, but they are trying.
