The most obvious being the word "recession" meaning a downturn for economists but people use it synonymous with "high unemployment" instead.

Yes, it's a real situation. People do misinterpret economics broadly than any other subject.
The situation is even worse in non-native English countries.

could it be that economics and finance people act as gatekeepers to information and they obscure things to maintain competitive advantage.
