Much of the "cutting edge" features of these newer models won't even work once you flash graphene. Stuff like google's AI camera features, etc.
Turns out, older phones have improved performance and battery life when you remove all the bloat and "phone-home" anti-features.
Just get one in the $200-400 range. Use the remaining $600 from your phone budget to buy a server/nas to begin self-hosting your cloud data too.

Note that you can still run the Google camera app with all it's features, with no Internet access, and no Google Services required.
Night time photos in particular are literally night and day compared to stock camera.

Do not limit only to those. Are quite expensive.
A device for using it with a bunch of bitcoin apps you don't need super-extra expensive ones.
In the range of 150-300 cuckbuck you can find quite good devices that can be degoogled.
Inclusive some old Pixels, LG, Motorola, Samsung etc.
People will need to stack more sats not to pay for fancy new phones.

I am comfortable with GrapheneOS installation, so I limited myself to Pixels.
Graphene OS says newer models have better security. I'll confirm that on their discussion forums.
Refurbished Pixel 6A cost about $150. I'll add that to the offering. I have to test older models to make sure they don't lag.

Learn how to do it will all types of phone, not just limiting to few expensive Pixels that anybody can do it.
Selling more volume of medium-low level devices will bring you more clients than just 2-3 expensive pixels.

Note that the Pixel 4a is not receiving more security fixes.
From the official list you can see that the pixel 5a is the oldest still supported.
At this point I think the oldest phone worth considering is the 6a as it still has a few years of security updates(until Jul 2027), whereas the 5a security updates end soon (Aug 2024)

I ended up getting an unlocked Pixel 8 Pro because (A) it provides the longest support window and (B) supports memory tagging.

Yes. You can find refurbished Pixel 6 or 6a for cheap and they are not too slow.

Found one locally for ~300 EUR, thinking about buying it (still seems expensive, after I bought iPhone 7, which is my main phone, year or two ago for ~130 EUR :D ).

For the DIY people buying second hand phones I strongly advise to get it yourself instead of buying online so that you can make sure that it is possible to unlock the OEM. So many phones are OEM locked by telcos (e.g., Verizon) and Graphene OS cannot be installed on them. So better checking in person (procedure explained in the Graphene OS guide) or buy from @abhishandy who will do it for you (i.e., find the phone and install the OS)

You can get a Pixel 6a for cheap these days, and still is supported for a couple of years.
The a series is usually the best bang for your buck.
