How does it compare with Phoenix in terms of ease of use? Seems like it must be lots more complicated, because you manage your own node/channels?

What are some of the best resources for understanding channels, and how best to manage them without losing money? I read lots about issues (forced closure, etc).

Now would probably be a good time to open channels, fees are fairly low.
