The worst draft
It's draft week so I want to post draft content but can we all take a moment to recognize NBA champion and future olympic gold medal winning Canadian basketball star Jamal Murray? Ice in his veins.
Alright on to the draft. Looking for your ideas on some of the worst drafts in recent memory. Maybe due to recency bias, I wanted to pick the 2021 draft class due to the debacle that was the Quarterback class that year but upon review, there were actually some really good players drafted that year. So, I needed to do some more digging and I found the utter disaster that was the 2013 NFL draft.
Like any draft there are some great players: Travis Kelce, Lane Johnson, Deandre Hopkins, Keenan Allen but for the most part this draft is just a complete mess. Take a gander https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2013/draft.htm
What do you think of 2013? Worst draft in the last 10-15 years or do you have something uglier?
We will do the best draft on Thursday.
@Bell_curve can you comment with your positions of need for our Chargers mock contest tomorrow.
Sats for all, GR
There's a long running history of bad drafts for the Raiders.
Are other teams finding good players in the draft?
reply
Not only for the raiders. Lion, Packers, and VIkings all have had bad picks before. Eventually every team suffers with a bad pick.
reply
Every team has bad picks every year but some do it more consistently than others.
reply
I'm pretty sure our last huge 1st round hit was Charles Woodson.
reply
He was pretty damn good. You can ride that train for another decade at least.
49ers still living off our glory years of the 80s and 90s. Although the team has been really good lately so that helps too.
reply
You don't want to look at the Raiders picks in the draft I posted. Yikes.
reply
Colin Rand Kaepernick Who were the ones who drafted him and suffered?
reply
Kap was really good for a few years. I wouldn't call that a bust. 49ers almost won a SB with him.
reply
Then he caused all those issues though. Didnt that team suffer for quite a while because of this?
reply
Well they were without a good quarterback for many years after but I don't know if his protests affected his play or focus or if the league just figured out his style of play and he wasn't good enough to adapt. Hard to say.
reply
I think the later was more likely. We see that all the time with athletic dual-threat QBs. Only the really special ones seem to have sustained success.
reply
It won't be worse than 2007. I can tell you that much without looking.

Off topic king is here again.
How about them games last night? 2 games with fantastic finishes! Well, fantastic finishes for the winning teams. Big choke job by the Lakers and another game for whiny Joel to cry about.
On the NHL side of things, we were 1 game away from having the home team game 1 sweep. Just as I had suggested, Oilers got the job done but Golden Knights got their win against the Stars. Oh, and I got eliminated from siggy's Leafs choke a thon contest. Good luck to the remaining contestants.
reply
Yes I noticed the Golden Knights ruined our streak and I did note the legend Jamal Murray single handedly defeated the Lakers. At least that's how I remember it. Jokic who? That was a pretty wild finish in NY as well.
reply
No man. Murray was playing like shit the whole game until the 4th. Joker kept them in the game (Joker had 27pts, 10 assists, 20 rebounds) until Murray woke up and finished off the Lakers with that beautiful buzzer beater.
reply
Joker only played so well because Murray is a great leader and lifted him up.

I thought it was because Murray decided to toy with the Lakers' emotions and allow them to think they had a chance at winning the game, only to crush them at the very last moment. Our fellow Canadian had it under control the whole time and was just messing with the Lakers to make the game more entertaining.
reply
Makes sense. Murray is a man of the people.

All time name at #6. Barkevious Mingo. Gone but not forgotten.
reply
Yeah awesome name. Kool Aid McKinstry in this draft.
reply
He burned out quickly, but man was Le'Veon Bell pretty solid for his rookie contract. And as a Jets fan, we at least got two good years from Richardson.
But overall, yeah, that was not a great class overall.
reply
Bell was arguably the best RB in the league for a few years.
reply
Right until he joined the Jets, as I recall.

lol, when I read stacker sports.. i was thinking something else entirely. sporting house

I don't know too much about NBA but in our Cricket IPL the worst draft was 2014 and bleacherreport covered it. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2043919-ipl-worst-xi-of-the-week-gautam-gambhir-mike-hussey-and-more
reply
Where does the IPL draft it's players from?
reply
Worldwide, except Pakistan

Did you follow the story of the cricket players that got drafted into major league baseball by the Pirates? They made it into a movie called Million Dollar Arm.
reply
Yes, I know a bit about some of them. Arjun Nimmalla and Dinesh Patel are from India and they previously played cricket. Also famous players from England like Jos butler and Alex Hales also joined hands there in MLB for sometime.
Have not seen the movie though but thanks for reminding, now I will watch it.
reply
Nimmalla is a real prospect though. Patel and Singh was more of a publicity stunt.
Nimmalla might be able to make the major leagues.
reply
Thanks for the valuable info. I'm also looking at Nimmalla.
What do you say? Should I start a fantasy league for Cricket here on SN?
reply
Anything can screw up the draft. All it takes is one team thinking another person is more important than another.
reply
It is true that a team's entire draft plan can go out the window if a certain player or more broadly position gets drafted well before expected.
reply
Yes, its kind of a guessing game. The teams know who they want, but if they are picked before they can take them, they usually have a second option.
