Hello Stackers
As you all know that I'm from India and we are a country whose National Game is Hockey (Field). Although, hockey isn't our first love as far as sports are concerned. We worship Cricket like religion.
Many Indians consider cricket more than just a sport because it is deeply intertwined with national pride, provides a sense of unity across diverse cultures within the country, and is often seen as a vehicle for social and economic mobility.

What is so good about cricket?

Cricket is a popular sport where most people enjoy the strategic and tactical aspects of the game, as well as the sense of suspense and sportsmanship. It's a game that fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among players and fans. Additionally, the international nature of cricket allows for diverse cultural exchanges and global competition. Overall, cricket offers a unique blend of athleticism, strategy, and tradition that appeals to a wide range of people around the world.

A Cricket Ground With Positions and Dimensions.

Here are some good points about cricket -
  • This is the only sport I know where you can see two teams compete for 5 days or 1 day or 3 hours or 1.5 or even for a few minutes but it can still have situations where the result can't be predicted until the last ball is bowled.
  • Unlike football/hockey, most matches end with an actual result.
  • One of the few games where players with different abilities compete together.
  • Age is just a number. You can be a good player at 15 years of age or 40 years.
  • Multiple formats, so everyone can enjoy. From hardcore followers to casual supporters.
  • Less prone to injury
  • Though it is very technical in nature, the beauty is that you can simplify it to the level you want.
  • You can have all the equipments or just a bat shaped piece of wood and a round thing that can be used as a ball, and start playing.
That's all I can think of now. If anything else comes to my mind, I will update in the comments.
Currently, we are in the midst of Cricket's most prominent and richest legue, Indian Premier Legue. I'm eying a definite victory for RR but who knows after all Cricket is such a highly speculative game.

I know nothing about cricket but I'm willing to start watching it. To get me interested, can you recommend a team that I can start hating? I always do better if I have a team to hate. Preferably, it should be a well funded, historically successful team from a big market city.
reply
You will definitely enjoy hating Mumbai Indians for sure. They fit into all your criteria.

If you can help me figure out how to bet on it, then I'm all ears.
I have a funny cricket story from college. There was a student taught cricket class that my friend signed up for. Of course, pretty much everyone in the class was either Indian or Pakistani.
They gave him fake times and locations for every meeting, because it wasn't really a cricket class. It was basically just a money laundering scheme those students had figured out and they had been betting that no one would be interested in actually signing up for the class.
reply
Yes, Cricket is also widely used for betting. I don't know the stats but when I look around me here almost everyone bets on Cricket. It may be because it's highly unpredictable game. A team that seems winning all the time may just loose it within a few deliveries.
I can surely help you in case you seriously like to understand how to bet on Cricket.

Thank you! I only played cricket when I was a young lad, but I never understood the rules very well.

I hope you can understand them now and restart playing cricket. I want to add one thing more. "If you aren't playing it at a professional level, it's the easiest game where you can set your own rules. As a kid, I used to play it on my terrace and if the ball goes out of the boundaries the batsmen had to be out.

I like watching cricket occasionally but don't follow it closely.

The next Cricket World Cup is going to be hosted jointly by the Caribbean and the US in October this year. So, it's high time you rise your interest levels, I suppose.
reply
Sorry, that's my bad the men's t20 World Cup this year will be hosted in June not in October.

Quick question. How do the wickets factor into the score?
reply
Wickets don't factor into the score directly. However the batting team has only 10 wickets. If the bowling teams take all these 10 wickets, it's all over for the batting team.
All 10 wickets can fall on a score of zero or they can pile on as many runs as they can.
reply
Great that makes sense.

Just noting that I came across this image today and now understand cricket slightly less than I did before. (But have enjoyed watching it in the past, for real). https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_fullsize/plain/did:plc:cqu5sht74wvmeh3otp5tphq6/bafkreibnmsziwycdgaevkgwxl2shl5bhvlvvoxxlifbq55gdl3rmg2dqnm@jpeg
