I taught my student yesterday.

I am happy that he spelt the and blue correctly.

He had trouble with three. I got him to draw the letters because I knew he likes to draw.

I took the opportunity to teach him the difference between three and tree. Singaporeans have trouble pronouncing the th sound, so it was good that we watched a video that shows us how to make it.

I am proud of myself. Because he knew how to spell in, I thought of fixed deposit to help him remember find.

The initial letter f and last letter d can be a mnemonic for fixed deposit.

He misspelt find as fine. So, I taught him to identify the small word fin first. I even got him to draw a fin. Then, I explained the magic ‘e’ rule to him.

Lastly, I highlighted that there are 2 l’s and 2 t’s in little.

It was a meaningful lesson.

I know it's not my fault, but on behalf of the Anglo-sphere, I apologize for how weird and confusing English is.

Don’t be silly! English being a bastard language is precisely the reason why I love it
