The Islet of Vélez de la Gomera is a Spanish possession in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Morocco. It compresses in a northwest-southeast direction for around 400 meters to a width that does not exceed 100 meters, covering a total of 19,000 m² (0.019 km²).

Until 1934, the rock was considered an island, however, after a storm, sand was deposited in the channel that separated it from Morocco, connecting it to land through this narrow strip of sand that is 85 meters long.

As the island is a Spanish possession, this strip of land can be considered the smallest land border in the world.

On August 29, 2012, seven activists from the "National Committee for the Liberation of Ceuta and Melilla", which fights for Moroccan sovereignty over the territories occupied by Spain in northern Morocco, occupied the islet of Vélez de la Gomera and there intended to raise the Moroccan flag.

After several warnings, four of the activists were detained by the Spanish guard who takes care of the site's security and three managed to escape.
