Each one is so newsworthy that it creates a false perception, much in the same way that airline crashes (which are statistically a lot less likely to kill you than bee stings, drowning, or choking on food) also get a lot more attention.
(Which isn't to say the attention isn't warranted -- multiple deaths are a tragedy -- but it skews perceptions.)
