Probably a dumb question...
These metrics specifically refer to "public" capacity. Does this mean that there are also private networks? And if so, do we have much information on private Lightning capacity (as channel management still requires an on-chain footprint)?

There are private channels that only the two parties involved know about.
As a consequence of the previous, there is no way to know that total number of sats locked in private channels.

Channels of nodes which are not announced publicly exist but they're not interesting I think, as they don't contribute by routing. Someone out there probably tries to map it anyhow!

The real flippening that no one talks about is the amount of Bitcoin locked up on the Lightning network flipping Wrapped Bitcoin. It will happen, eventually.
