I quite like using SN on browser but yes, an app would be nice.

reply

I agree

on my desktop I love using the browser version

but when I'm out and using my phone I would love to use an app that I can access the site faster

similar to how CryptoPanic has their app that looks like their site but runs like as an app too

reply

Obligatory link to the mock for a mobile app :)

reply

Assuming that it doesn't violate any SN rules, it would not be too hard to build a 3rd party client for this purpose.

This actually sounds like a tremendous learning project for Swift / SwiftUI. Going to hack on this idea for sure. Of course, I will fully open source the project as well. This is the way.

reply

A PWA should be fine, I don't see the need for a full app

reply

Hear hear! Full agreement

reply

It needs to come, mobile is too important and can't be avoided. Tho on my android the website looks very okay, let's see when the team makes it a priority.

reply

Mobile browsing is better than installing yet another application

reply

This.

There isn't any inherent functionally SN needs as of yet that would require an app. Perfect the web client first then scale from there, only IF needed. Please don't go the reddit route of disastrous app design (when it wasn't needed in the first place, for core UX at least).

I was thinking about this yesterday! It'll be so cool if Stacker News had an app. I'd totally use it.

reply

Would love an app. In the meantime, a bookmark icon on your home screen works pretty well. Access faster. No push notifs though.

reply

Keep in mind smartphone apps for general use as in published from an app store puts the service at the mercy of Apple and Google requirements for social media such as moderation under their rules.

reply

Roundabout solution: how about installing a mobile RSS app? And plug in the RSS feed from the website?

reply

I just want push notifications so I don't have to check the site every few hours. Maybe this is an intentional growth hack for "engagement"

reply

Not intentional. Most would also agree that push notifications are a bigger hack on your attention than you having to "pull" your notifications.

reply

Has anything happened on this subject? Definitely would love to revive the conversation about it. A SN app would be amazing!

reply

Convenient solution for now for iOS:
Add a shortcut to the site to Home Screen.

reply

lol when I first started using stacker I wanted an app as well however after having to access via web browser for a couple months I actually think it adds to stackers ui/ux :)
