Easter At Our House

My wife and I always host a family Easter Sunday dinner. This year it was a pretty small gathering of six people. My brother in law came with his son, who is in his early twenties. We had a few drinks and antipasto before dinner. My wife made home made manicotti using her mother's recipe for the first time. It was truly delicious, and got the stamp of approval from her 95 year old mom, who’s appetite isn’t what it used to be.
Everyone was feeling good and relaxed. My brother in law and I have spoken about bitcoin many times over the years. Like most people, he has always been skeptical. I talked to him during Christmas dinner in 2022, when bitcoin was around $16,500 or so. I tried to get him to buy as much as he could afford, but he wasn’t convinced. He had seen the SBF headlines proclaiming the collapse of bitcoin.

Non-Compliance

My brother in law is a teamster truck driver. He’s a sharp guy and a natural anarchist. He taught me a few things about standing up to authority during covid. He is an excellent worker. He gets up at 3:00am to drive his local routes around New York City. The company he works for has a lot of trouble finding reliable drivers. Either they don’t show up on time, fail the frequent drug tests, or are generally unreliable. My brother in law is old school. He had his own asphalt paving company for 25 years, so from his perspective this truck driving job is easy. When covid hit, he was told he had to wear a mask at work. He just said no. They said they would have to fire him. He called their bluff. They didn’t want to lose him, so they set up a chair in the hall and would bring him out the paperwork he needed to complete before getting in his truck. Eventually they just let him inside without a mask. When the vaccines came out, he was told he had to get vaccinated as a condition of employment. Again he said no. They said he would be fired. He said he didn’t care. They then allowed him to take a covid test every day instead of getting vaccinated. After about a week, he said he wasn’t getting tested anymore. They said they would then have to fire him. The next day, he showed them the now outdated covid test result from the day before, and continued to show them that same test result paper has it aged, day by day. They pretended not to notice the date. He never lost his job. Since covid, he has become interested in politics, but he will not support any party or candidate. He has no faith in the government.

The Breakthrough

During dinner I said a few things about bitcoin, and we talked about his son’s new job as an air traffic controller. My nephew is a very smart kid. We talked about stuff like his salary, health benefits, etc. My brother in law said something like “talk to your uncle. He probably made a killing with bitcoin.” He had obviously been aware of bitcoin enough to know the price. It turned out my nephew, though skeptical, knew a little about “crypto”, and had obviously done some reading. At one point he said, “hey, what about Eth?” My wife, of all people, without missing a beat, said “that’s a shitcoin.” I was so proud. He said he didn’t want to lose money buying any coins. I told him to just buy bitcoin, and to start with a small amount, an amount small enough for him not to get all upset if it goes down. I did not want to over complicate matters, nor did I want to send him the coinbase route, so I settled on cash app, which he was already familiar with. Not ideal, but I thought it was best in his case. I told him to buy a little, and then to start reading. I opened my Zeus app and explained to him about my node and a little about mining. I wish I had my bitaxe running, but that’s still on hold for now. At some point during the conversation my brother in law asked him to set up cash app for him on his phone when they got home. He wanted to set up a dca. Yesterday I got word that they both made their first buys. I will keep tabs on their progress.
Your family sounds awesome. I'm surprised the Canadian trucker saga didn't get him leaning in Bitcoin's direction.
I've caught occasional new stories about truckers refusing to deliver to NYC. Is that anything significant or just hot air?
reply
The Canadian truckers definitely got to him in an anti government way. You should hear him about Trudeau! I think the only guy he hates more is Andrew Cuomo. I didn't want to bore everyone in my post with all the details, but he used to buy the "bitcoin is a government plot" thing.
reply
Gotcha
We all get bitcoin at the price we deserve.

I recently experienced something similar with my mother... after talking to her so much, she decided to buy $20 and when she paid $1.5 in commission, she created a drama... then well, I told her, don't worry, I returned her $20, I kept the SATS. And I didn't tell him more. Days later, Ella alone came to me to ask me about SATS after hearing something in her yoga class that the price was going up. and I showed her on the Many.sat page the value of the SATS of those remaining $18.5 that at current prices have doubled and a little more... and now she is interested!! Now I have it watching videos about BTC and listening to @lunaticoin

I know. We can talk about how price doesn't matter, but it sure matters to those just getting exposed to bitcoin.

I hope you warned them that now that everyone is buying, price will finally collapse to 12K heheh just kidding. but who knows?
I hope they learn about what it all really means and not only interested in the price as many do. Bitcoin journey is much more than the price.
reply
Don't think it didn't cross my mind! I mentioned volatility. I said don't worry about price, but it's human nature to worry about price.
reply
Tell them it has to be a 4 year hold

Great story Siggy. Kudos on the easter orange pill. Hopefully they don't get spooked by the sell off the last couple days.
reply
Oh, I heard about it!
reply
Haha of course. My buddy who I orange pilled at 20k was messaging me when we dropped from 69k-61k asking if he should stop DCAing and just wait for it to crash. Sigh.
reply
I missed your truckers to NYC question. He didn't notice it. That was definitely a Trump supporter thing after the crazy insurance fraud nonsense. It doesn't appear to have gotten much traction.
reply
Of course the price crashes after you orange pill someone. Always happens.
I was hearing it from my mom in 2022

I’ve had good experiences with cash app. It’s how I got my first corn, too. Yes it’s KYC but in general it’s pretty solid, in my experience

Good Job !👍

This part was my favorite 😂
At one point he said, “hey, what about Eth?” My wife, of all people, without missing a beat, said “that’s a shitcoin.”

Yeah, that's great. I love it when my wife demonstrates she not just humoring me :)

This young man will one day thank you. That is, if it sticks. If it doesn't the first time he will likely find his way back later though. Good work sir.
Regarding your brother in-law. This is a story I know well. As I've said, I have a blue collar background and have many friends that work in skilled trades and agriculture. This statement has been one I've heard for at least 20 years.
has a lot of trouble finding reliable drivers. Either they don’t show up on time, fail the frequent drug tests, or are generally unreliable.
And they say it is getting worse. Its sad really. The moral decline of our people in the US. The fact that so few people see the value in work and actually care about their reputation.
I was told many years ago by my father that if I worked hard, was honest, and showed up on time I'd never go hungry. It has always been true. In the 90s during the recession I lost multiple jobs but I always found a new one. It motivated me to develop more skills that would be in demand. I now know that one of the most important things about mental health is to do good work. You can't trick your mind into thinking you are worth something when you know you are phoning it in. When you know you provide value it really makes the work more enjoyable. Many people today seem to forget that when they are paid to do something by someone else that the money they receive is proof of their value. As humans we have more value than just our work we do but this exchange of value for value is proof of value. I believe any work when done with the right perspective can be rewarding but out culture has distorted our view of money and the value of work.
I probably sound old to the younger stackers but I bet you get what I'm saying @siggy47

Badass brother in law! Don't forget to mention the dust limit for humble DCA-ers. 😬
reply
Oh, I suspect those sats are going to be on cash app for a while. I may have to get them off myself.
reply
good job, I'm sure that in the end you will be able to make him a bitcoin maximalist, according to what you say, he is a fairly anarchist person, so emphasis should be placed on that part of bitcoin

Good advice. I can see him becoming a toxic maxi

Asphalt paving company, Teamsters truck driver …
Hmmm 🧐
Is he a jets fan? Does he live in NJ? Where is Jimmy Hoffa?
I also respect him for supporting neither party. More people need to do this.
reply
Giants fan. He insists that old Meadowlands end zone rumor about Jimmy is not true😀

You have an interesting family. Teamsters truck driver and air traffic control.
I love how your brother in law ignored every COVID mandate because of the scarcity of reliable essential workers

So few people just say no or push back on anything ever. It really disappoints me when I see it but it makes me appreciate people with backbone and principles even more.

This is fantastic. Cash App seems like a really solid way to get people in the door if they're already using it for fiat. Glad they're both already on the DCA route!
(Also, am now hungry for manicotti and it's hours before lunch.)

I have some leftovers defrosting now.

Your mission is completed. You made them buying their first sats. Now you have to work on making them to continue the journey.
Great post! 😊

Exactly. I brought up the cold wallet idea to my nephew already. That might be a bridge too far for his dad. We'll see.
