**Let’s Learn about Ramadan**

Turned info into bite-sized insights for my students today:

**Ramadan**

- Occurs every year in the 9th month of the Islamic calendar
- ⁠Muslims don’t eat or drink from dawn to dusk
- ⁠They are reminded of the plight of poor & starving people
- ⁠Muslims in Singapore flock to Geylang bazaar to shop for Hari Raya Puasa (aka Aidilfitri) celebrations
- Get a henna design. Henna is a reddish-brown dye obtained from the leaves of the henna plant. Girls and women love to stain their fingernails with the dye and have beautiful intricate patterns drawn on their hands.
- Enjoy Iftar, a meal that Muslims eat after sunset. They gather at mosques to tuck into the food.
- Wear matching-coloured baju kurung to go visiting on the 1st day of Hari Raya. 
- Make popular kueh like pineapple tarts, kueh lapis (layered cake) and bahulu (a type of sponge cake)
- Explore food bazaars. Some popular foods include vadai (a savoury fritter snack), kebab (meat cooked on a skewer and wrapped in pita bread) and Ramly burgers (greasy egg-wrapped patties).
