preparing for summer and planning to install this AC near and escape vent and wondering if it could function the same way if installed horizontally? Or is designed to run only vertically?

Check the drain spout on it. Does it look like it is oriented in a way that will still work on its side?
All AC systems pull moisture out of the air, that moisture must go somewhere.
Water obeys gravity.
