The idea for this post came when I was brushing my teeth. I had such a good time reading about everyone’s trip memories, even though I probably won’t be able to travel to many of the places you guys mentioned. This got me thinking about my honeymoon and here goes…
My wife wanted to lepak in the Maldives, but being active, I couldn’t imagine just chilling and doing nothing. So I insisted on exploring Italy for our honeymoon. Thank goodness we did. Even though it happened about a decade ago, some of the memories made then remain etched in my mind. Cobblestone streets in Rome, ordering gelato or coffee, Michelangelo’s chiselled body, eating gelato (you can see how that is a theme) and watching the world go by at sidewalk cafes, following the flow in Vernice, oxtail steak, ham and melon, ancient sculptures and paintings, oldest pharmacy in the wocolourful Burano, flirting with the Italians. I like how carefree and full of life I was in Italy. That’s why travel is the antidote for the soul!

I don’t have any great takeaways to share. I remember how divinely delicious tomato-based spaghetti was in Italy. Just tomato base and strands of pasta, mind you. No other ingredients. I learnt that if your product is extraordinary, you don’t need to embellish it with much else.
Where did you go for your honeymoon?
lepak is a Malay word that basically means hang loose. It has been accepted into the Oxford dictionary.
We went on a Caribbean cruise several years after getting married. We were too poor for a honeymoon at the time we got married.

I had a honeymoon but was too poor to buy even a TV set haha

rented a tiny cabin by the lake, cooked over the fire, took a few hikes. Mainly, saved money haha. But it was awesome, since we love camping together it was a beautiful time. I had the distinct realization that I would have to change my narrative about my life, before being married I thought of myself as a sad person lol, but now I am a happy person.

This must be the greatest ode to marriage haha

We went to Ottawa. We're museum and bookstore fans, and money-wise, that was a lot more affordable for us than London was.

You sounds like my kind of guy - museums n bookstores haha

Went to St. John and explored the USVI. Thinking of going back for our 10 year.

Just with your wife or with the kids too (assuming that you have kids)?

Just me and my wife. Didn’t have kids at the time. But if I did I think I’d wait until they’re older. Gotta be able to swim well.

Costs Rica! Awesome trip. Mile long zip lines, hanging bridges, hot springs, volcano, then resort on the water to chill

Sounds like you spent quality time with your wife n Nature!

We had just moved, and both started new jobs prior to our wedding. So we did a ski weekend in Colorado. Nothing fancy, but that's sort of who we are. We have done much 'better' trips since, but our honeymoon was pretty basic in comparison.

Sometimes the simplest trips are the most memorable!

Which time? Haha. If at first you don't succeed, try again.
First time Barbados. Second time we didn't really have a true honeymoon, just rented a place by a beach in California for a few days.
reply
Sounds like the same formula with us. Chose chilling the second time round

I went home

Just being together is enough!
