This term, I get to teach a boy for an hour every week. His teacher wanted me to focus on suffixes today.
I saw this as a great chance for test whether he knew how to read some sight words from the Dolch list.
He could read these words.
Then, I taught him how to attach the suffix ‘-fly’ to these sight words. He was able to read helpful, playful, thankful and wishful.
Since I was confident about his reading, I moved on to spelling. I got him to try to spell these words using coloured letters. I hoped that he would remember these words better because this was a hands-on activity.
I stressed that we just need one ’l’ to spell the ‘-ful’ suffix. He remembered it.
Lastly, I taught him how to attach the ‘-ly’ suffix to the words.
| helpful | helpfully |
| playful | playfully |
| useful | usefully |
| thankful | thankfully |
I enjoyed building words with him through suffixes. I hope he found the lesson meaningful.
