And you will know us by the trail of dead
The title is a reference to an alt rock band from Texas that was moderately popular during the early 2000s. The origin of their name was taken from an ancient Mayan religious ritual chant.
I feel it is the most fitting description of the current state of the Stacker Sports 2024 March Madness Survivor Pool. One day, half the pool dead. Not much surviving happening yesterday. The falling bodies started when @stacksatstoday did not enter a first round pick in time and maybe that was a bad omen for the day because @tnuts420 got taken out with a Mississippi State loss. @Undisciplined and @siggy47 fell with BYU. The carnage continued into the evening as @wumbo lost in a huge upset with Kentucky and @gnilma was axed with Texas Tech.
It could have all been much worse if not for a little help from the refs sealing Kansas a victory. @StillStackinAfterAllTheseYears and @kr reaped the benefit of a late incorrect foul call on a clear, clean block that sealed the game for the Jayhawks but a win is a win. @Turdinthepunchbowl and @pj had a much easier path to victory with Illinois and Gonzaga.
@Bell_curve and I will be tested today.
To all the stackers that are now eliminated. You will not be forgotten. Thanks for playing.
Round two picks will be posted as soon as possible tonight. The last game is scheduled for 10pm. I will likely work on the post while that game is going so I can have it out as soon as it is over or no longer in doubt. Post will come from the @themadnessking account and I will tag all the players remaining who need to get 2nd round picks in asap.
Sats for all, GR

It was definitely a blood bath
And I need a shower
reply
I swear I did not bribe the ref, and no one can prove otherwise!
reply
Do you think they will institute coaches challenge for next year like they have in nba?
Even if it is just for the tournament.
I have to think it will be on the table. Robbed and rigged were trending on twitter after that.
reply
I'd like to see it (though as we know from the NBA, MLB, and the NFL, that only helps so much). Tourney games are important enough that I think it's worth making the effort.
reply
I think they should have it. Who knows what would have happened last night there is no guarantee Samford would have scored but I would have loved to see that last 14 seconds played as a one point game instead of 3.

Nice. I first heard of them when one of their songs was in the 2005 MVP Baseball game. I really liked it so I bought their CD. Good album. Didn't really follow the band after that but always loved the name.

Another Morning Stoner here :)
@grayruby if I zap this post, does it go to the prize pool? Or only the official post? Any way to track the pool amount?
reply
Current prize pool is 12,163 sats.
Zap here #472149 if you want to add to the pool. Easier for me to keep track of than determining what zaps from the daily post should go to the pool.
reply
Done thanks
reply
Wow big zap.
reply
I'll add more as we go on, since I'm gonna be perfect on my picks and get them all back anyhow.
reply
Haha. That's the spirit.

MLB and NBA pools coming soon so just gives you extra time to plot your vengeance.

Charles Barkley was a good sport. He said we need to schedule Yale football

New Mexico got hammered today.
This pool is a blood bath!!!
Feel free to misquote me

I just saw the score. When we first discussed the format, I was thinking we can't do a traditional survivor pool because everyone will just take all the 2 and 1 seeds so @Undisciplined came up with the idea of having a point system tied to seed and I thought ok lets do that but for a tiebreaker only that way people can decide what strategy they want. I did not expect this would be the outcome. I was hoping we would have at least a couple players get to the final four.

It’s fine
The nature of survivor and March Madness
I think Kansas will lose tomorrow
In fact I will bet against Kansas on my own
reply
Maybe you'll have to resurrect the contest for the final four if no one survives that long.
reply
Good idea
Pick winners but also total score to make it more interesting along with the seeding

Auburn absolutely shit the bed in the second half so I am out too. I haven't seen a sporting mess like that since my daughter's tball games last summer.
Credit to Yale they hit some big shots but Auburn totally fell apart. Throwing the ball all over the court. Couldn't hit a free throw to save their lives and missed countless shots right around the basket.
So we only have 4 out of 12 players going to the second round.
reply
Did not see this one coming. I usually pull for Ivy upsets in the first round, but Yale barely made the tournament, and I didn't think they had a chance.
reply
Decades of lowering academic standards are finally paying off.
reply
I'm laughing so hard over here. This pool has been such a disaster. When was the last time Yale beat Auburn at anything requiring physical prowess? It has to have been the 1800's.
reply
It is pretty funny. Thank goodness MLB pool starts soon.
reply
I assume everyone picked pretty heavily favored teams. We must have done something to displease somebody's god.
Blood 🩸 bath

11 seeds are 3-1 I picked the one that lost 😂

Meanwhile, in MLB, the Mets signed JD Martinez, which I'm excited about. And they gave him a mini-Bonilla contract ($1.5 million deferred per year from 2034 through 2038), which would bother me but it's a lot smaller than Bonilla's, and honestly, by that time, it's a steal for the Mets.
reply
Good signing. Was the contract structure to stay under luxury tax?
reply
Not quite -- I think they're already over it, but they want to avoid being more over it.
reply
Teams just starting to arb the fact that the USD will be worth a lot less in 10 years I guess. Maybe they will figure out they should keep some of those deferred commitments in Bitcoin and double the benefit of USD down and Bitcoin up in USD terms.
reply
I hope you're right -- if there's one thing the Mets have shown, it's that they often predict things 100% wrong.

Ok. I am going to post the second round games as soon as the games are over tonight but I will copy this comment over.

How sweet it is. On to the next one.
Remember you can’t pick Kansas twice
