Yeah I literally watched a friend put my referral link in and it removed my link and just went to the regular SN url

right? I'm confused, I never got the referral. I was told at the time it's because they have cookies disabled

Yeah, I decided not to bother with referrals. If they use a browser that has cookies disabled (which most people with a privacy mindset do) then it doesn't work
