** A little bit of Seoul**
Beginning tomorrow I expect we will be mired in madness for a few days, so I felt it would be good to shift gears a little today. Baseball is back!
The MLB kicked off it's 2024 season with an early opening day game this morning between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres as part of a two game international series in Seoul, South Korea. Korea is not quite on Japan's level in terms of international baseball but it is very popular there and the KBO is a solid league.
The Dodgers ended up winning the game 5-2 via a 4 run 8th inning rally. It also featured the debut of Shohei Ohtani in a Dodgers uniform. Let's not talk about the debacle around him not signing with the Blue Jays. I'm over it, I swear.
They play one more game in the series, which will take place tomorrow morning (6am est), and then we get the last few games of spring training as the teams gear up for next Thursday's official opening day.
MLB survivor pool info will be posted next week mid week and picks will begin the following week so we will have madness and opening week to keep us busy.
Sats for all, GR
CNN is the only "news" channel they have on the ship. I watched a feature on South Korean adoration of Ohtani. He's like a god.
reply
Apparently not to everyone. There was a bomb threat for the stadium and it explicitly named Ohtani and other players.
reply
They left that out of the report.
reply
Koreans adore Shohei???
Koreans hate Japanese?
reply
It's weird. Who knows? It's CNN

A friend of mine texted me that story just about ten minutes ago. I saw the headline but haven't read it yet.
reply
It's just wild. If someones not already working on a movie adaptation, I'd be shocked.

Guy probably had the best translator job in the world.

Man, those overseas opening days always catch me off guard. Benny Agbayani hit a grand slam in Japan to give the Mets a win back in the day (though I think it was the second game), and I remember how excited I was watching it.
Filled out all my free brackets on Draftkings, just in case. I expect nothing to come of any of them.
reply
That must have been the highlight of Benny's career.
reply
The highlight, but definitely not the most memorable moment.
reply
I forgot about that.

This is going to be crazy. I'm also planning on doing an NBA survivor pool for the playoffs. I was thinking the most fun place to start would actually be the final regular season game for each team, since the incentives get so strange at the end.
reply
March Madness will be over by then so we will just have NBA Playoffs and MLB. Although I did want to do something around the NFL draft as well but not sure what to do with that.

How about something like trying to guess the position a particular player will be drafted? Latest correct guess wins.
reply
Similar to the nba trade contest you mean? Stacker chooses the player and position selected.
Or do you mean something more similar to a pick em where there are a set of players and stackers have to select where each will be drafted?
reply
I meant the first one, but didn't make the connection to the trade contest. Maybe restrict it to the 1st round, so it doesn't drag on for a few days.

You never gave me your assessment on the next Trent Williams, Brandon Parker.
All I know is he is huge and not very good so far.
reply
We never got to see him in real action. I feel like he always either got injured at the beginning of the season or was an unused backup option. I hope your 49ers have a better starting option.
reply
They brought him in to compete for a back up job. I still think the OLine is a problem. We will see what they do at the draft. 49ers have a very tough schedule this season. I still think they will win the west pretty easily but the path to the number one seed is not so clear.
