In 2022 my shower was making a really strange noise. I called a plumber to look at it. He charged me a fee and proceeded to take the shower apart. After doing so he noticed the shower assembly needed a specific adapter that is now discontinued. Thus the whole shower will need to be replaced and since the shower workspace was extremely tight he suggested I change my water heater as well.
Here were his quotes
Good morning, I have two options for you. Options 1 50 gal power vent water heater with two 3" fluid pipes and replacement of shower diverter ($4,995.00) 6.7M sats Option 2 75 gal power vent water heater with two fluid pipes and replacement of shower 🚿 diverter ($6,880.00) 10.2M sats Everything included labor and parts
I was shocked! After waiting a few years I asked my handyman how much would he do the work for he said $400.
*** today he finished the repair and it was only $611***
Now I know water heaters last about 12 years or so but I have had zero issues with this one. Wonder why plumbers do this up sale business. Either way next month going to start saving to replace the water heater.
This is a terrible business strategy. You will win more customers and referrals for life by being honest with people. Sounds like you have a good handy man.
Early in our business we had a contract to replace a bunch of ceiling tiles in a car dealership. Because the ceilings were so high the customer really wasn't sure, beyond the obviously broken or stained ones, how many needed to be replaced and which ones could be salvaged. He gave us the ok to replace up to 300 tiles without needing to get another authorization. We purchased 300 tiles with an agreement from the supplier to return any unopened packages we didn't use. During the job we discovered most tiles were in great condition and just needed to a light vacuum to get some dust off and they looked brand new (especially from the ground). We only had to replace 50 or 60 tiles and my business partner wanted to exaggerate and replace about 100 more since we were authorized for 300. I said no. The GM was so pleased at how much money he saved compared to what he thought it would be that he referred us to two other car dealerships nearby and we ended up getting 10's of thousands of dollars worth of work from them because we were honest and saved this guy a couple grand.

Oh man, this drives my wife nuts. She basically kicks anyone out of our house who starts trying to upsell her on crap she didn't ask for.
