I'm not going to lie. I kind of buy into some of the hype that soy is gonna give me both cancer and double Ds. I'm no soy boy but I have to be honest. I have tried it. I know. Please don't tell anyone. It's alright if you fry it enough. Anyways, I want to know. What's bad about soy as a meat alternative.
pull down to refresh
I've looked into the anti-soy claims and the evidence seems pretty weak. I recall that there's even some evidence that the phyto-estrogen in soy essentially crowds out estrogen in our bodies and leads to less effective estrogen.
Tofu isn't my favorite form to consume beans in, but we eat it somewhat regularly.
I love most beans in general. My wife is a big fan of soy so I eat it sometimes. Not my favorite.
something to do with estrogen production
And that causes gayness or something, right?
No, but maybe lactation
Like from the boob area?
yes
I ate soybeans a long time ago as a cheap source of protein before I learned all the shit I've learned now.
Biggest notable effect: it TORCHED my libido. That told me everything I needed to know at the time.
That can't be good. Did your libido recover when you went back on the meats?
Yes, as soon as I stopped, it came back.
Side note: when I started the carnivore diet, my libido went through the roof - like I was a teenager again.
My wife's soy-allergic, so it's not a regular food for us, but I do enjoy it occasionally (my Thai place does a great fried tofu). Most of the anti-soy "science" seems dubious or built on people consuming way more than I ever would.
That said, I like meat too much to ever really dive into alternatives.
I cook and eat tempeh occasionally. I think it's a pretty good soybean product. The digestion/fermentation of the soybeans by the introduced fungus is a good way to improve its nutritional profile and probably (although I have no source for this) decrease any negative effects from the original soybeans.
And when in Japan I will eat tofu, where it has traditional roots and is nicely incorporated into their cuisine. But I will also eat basashi (raw horsemeat sushi) when in Japan too. Oh, and natto is good stuff.
I'm really dubious about the mass manufactured soy milk in western markets however, with a lot of them bulking out the 'milk' with dodgy oils (e.g. canola).
I had no idea those other versions existed. It seems like mass production generally leads to worse products.
Yep, try to avoid soy.
Check out the video "Plants are trying to kill you", by Anthony Chaffee - (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1cqNDDG4aA).
In addition to all of what's mentioned in the video, as well as being a much poorer, less bioavailable source of protein compared to meat, here's a long quote with references from The Carnivore Code (CHAPTER 5: OF UNICORNS AND FAIRY TALES):
Too much soy is bad for men such as estrogen
No, I don't believe that's an alternative. In fact that's plant based. In modern era they can't sell you the product if they don't sell you the idea.
I agree with that part about selling ideas. Do you believe there are any quality alternatives for people who don't feel like eating animals?
Definitely, Some whole foods, such as beans, lentils, chickpeas, and mushrooms, contain protein or have a meaty texture and can work well as meat substitutes.
Or what is good about it for that matter?
