Indeed, most people don't need a $50-500 hardware wallet to store their Bitcoin, even with a 3-figure sum.
However, it's vital to offer simple, intuitive solutions for as many people as possible, and I think that starting to "tinker" with solutions on several non-trusted devices is more amateurish than a real storage solution.
Besides, there are solutions offering an acceptable level of security that could be suitable for most people.
I'm thinking of Satochip's hardware wallet, which comes in a $25 version... Their open-source solution is also available in DIY mode. For those without the requisite technical skills, there's also the bearer asset like OpenDime or Satodime - self-custody made easy.
