As an author, he was probably correct. As a work of art, perhaps not. Dune is fantasy that involves a desert Messiah, whereas Lord of the Rings was a Fantasy involving unexpected not all that powerful saviors. They are opposite sides of a coin in terms of who or what serves as a hero.
