I'm doing it. In my quest to become a living, breathing cliche, my wife and I are taking a cruise next week with my oldest friend and his wife. I'll have internet connection, so I intend to report any goings on that are even remotely bitcoin related. Old people love to talk about retirement savings, so I hope to eavesdrop on many conversations regarding the ETFs. I will try to push self custody instead, but I probably won't get far. I'll also see if I can spend some sats anywhere, but I doubt it. I'll keep you posted.
For the record, NO sats were spent on this trip. Only filthy fiat!
Have a nice trip and please forget to post so I can steal your hat.

Sounds fun. Where are you cruising too?

We're heading south to the Bahamas. After a whole bunch of caribbean cruises over my lifetime, I follow the Apocalypse Now "never get out of the boat" mantra anyway, unless it's a port I've never been to. https://youtu.be/YbFvAaO9j8M
reply
I am sure it will be fun.
reply
It will. It's really about hanging out with friends.
reply
And eating 6 meals a day lol. Very important that you never miss a meal on a cruise.
reply
That I don't like. It makes me feel sick watching the cattle line.
reply
All day drinking… awesome!
I’m sure you have done it but one of the highlights of my job was watching for pier runners. All you need to be is on the gangway side as the clock ticks down to departure and watch them come running. Informal awards and shouts are given for effort, loss of footwear or beach items, the man who leaves his girlfriend to ‘stop it leaving’….
All fun until you see the Purser and Head of Security with a brown envelope talking to the local agent (who will organise the trips and is port liaison) you know there is someone taking an expensive trip to the next port…. and their passport retrieved from the safe is in that envelope.
reply
Yes! I have done that. There have been times when the boat has left people. Passengers start hooting and hollering as they race to the boat.
reply
Fewer get left than deserve it.
My favourite memory was watching a man standing on the back of his wives mobility scooter as she gunned it for all of its worth… we watched them from the port entrance saying ‘are they with us?’, ‘I don’t think they are with us..’, ‘you know I think they may be with us..’ and it was the most painfully slow sprint over a 1/2 mile I have ever witnessed.
Reminiscent of Sir Lancelot attacking the castle in Monty Python and the Holy Grail - he then had a go at every member of the crew for allowing the boat to leave ‘early’ before being shown the itinerary.
reply
Great story! I suspect you have a million of them. Did you work many cruises? I knew a married couple who met working a cruise ship.
reply
No. I did 6-months to see some of the world and practice my languages - I could have stayed but I didn’t want to do a winter season.
Relationships between crew were tolerated but not encouraged and we all fancied the dancers (they tended to date within themselves though).
There are different tiers of employee, usually based on roles, so not everyone mixed in the same crew bars.
reply
Awesome! I guess my wife and I are old at heart, because cruising is our favorite form of vacation.

When my daughter was young we did a few cruises with my mom and my sister's family. I must say, I did an Alaska cruise that was absolutely fantastic. I would do that one again in a minute.

Never been on a cruise, but my in-laws / friends do them. Everyone I know says Alaska cruise is where its at....evidently there is one that finishes with a 3 day train trip thru the Denali national park...I can imagine thats an incredible experience.
reply
We were fortunate that Denali (Mount McKinley) was visible through most of our visit. The train ride we took was from Talkeetna to Whittier. Incredible.
reply
That is lucky. You can go years without seeing Denali, even if you live there.
reply
We also took a plane ride around it. Small propeller plane with a crazy Alaskan bush pilot. Both beautiful and terrifying. I took notes on each day of the trip and I'm glad I saved them. It brings back lots of memories.

I want to enjoylife on a cruise. Unfortunately I am single so no partner thing but I can enjoy alone on the deck forever. The best place is on the cruise deck. Fuckin' love it.

We went on a cruise last year and met a couple. The man plays the casino a lot, enough to break even, but gets enough points that they are able to cruise about 2 out of every 4 weeks due to the rewards. They have ~800 cruise days under their belt, so of course they get a lot of perks for that too. Thought that was a pretty good idea. I love cruises.
reply
I forgot about the casino thing. In my younger days I spent a lot of time in casinos. They don't interest me much anymore, but maybe that's a good place to hang out for some bitcoin talk. I'll check it out.
reply
Go off and enjoy your life. We only have one ✌🏻 And don't eavesdrop on old people buying Bitcoin etfs 😂😂

Good advice.

Very brave to spend fiat in the start of the bull run and pre halving instead of buying more bitcoin. Kidding ;) I would do the cruise too if I could. Enjoy !
reply
Don't think it didn't cross my mind!
reply
lol old people like to talk about retirement savings 😂
Have fun!
reply
I never had a chance to cruise till now. But it would be one of my priorities next year. I'll be going around the world and will need to cross seas as well, so that will. It really creates some butterflies in my stomach. Really that's one of my lifetime dreams 'To be with my partner on a cruise holiday.'
reply
I'll also see if I can spend some sats anywhere, but I doubt it.
It would be important for you to find a place to show your friends how it works. The practical issue is important to be shown 'in loco'.
reply
I'll have my Zeus and Phoenix wallets with me, so I will try.

You are going to see that secret island? 😂😂😂😂

A pre-loaded debit card - interesting. So that works better than a regular credit card, for getting a good exchange rate?
I went on a trip last year to Europe and was unpleasantly surprised when I couldn't get cash out of the ATM without a huge charge. If I remember right it was 3.5% or something along those lines. I checked with all my bank accounts, and none of them offered free withdrawals of cash. This is a change from a couple years back, when it was possible.

Debit card pre loaded is a good idea
