Free as a Bird
The NFL hotstove is heating up with a flurry of activity over the weekend in preparation for upcoming free agency season. (That's how you do it MLB- don't screw it up again next year)
Chris Jones signed a monster deal to stay with the Chiefs. Baker stayed a Bucc and Russell Wilson is headed to steel town. Those were the most notable transactions but there are a lot of high quality players set to become FAs as many cap stretched teams try to get their houses in order before what has been pegged to be a notably strong draft class.
49ers are cutting Arik Armstead, which is unfortunate, but necessary due to his high salary and recent injury history. This will likely give them the payroll flexibility to add another DT or an edge player to play opposite Bosa or possibly both. Let the irrational takes begin.
There should be a lot of activity the next couple days as extensions and cuts continue to happen before free agency kicks off on Wednesday.
Shill me who you are hoping your team cuts or extends in the next couple days.
Sats for all, GR
Jimmy G is our one big cut that I'm looking forward to, but he'll be a post-June 1st cut for cap reasons. Hunter Renfrow's a likely cut, even if I'm hoping they'll figure it out with him.
I'm hoping we'll get Koonce extended. He really started to shine opposite Crosby and it might be early enough to lock him up cheap.

How's the Raiders cap situation? I haven't looked at it.

For once, our cap situation is amazing. We have something like $80 million to spend in the offseason and pretty much our entire roster is already accounted for.
I'm hoping to see a couple of All Pro guys join the team.
reply
Very nice. Who you hoping they target?
reply
Leonard Williams would fill our need at DT and he has history with Patrick Graham.
Oh, I just remembered that the 9ers hired our former OC. First Staley, then Lombardi, what are they doing over there? Assembling a staff that definitely won't get poached in the off-season?
reply
49ers were waiting so long for their 6th Lombardi (losing the last 3 times they went to SB) that they just decided to hire one.
I think Hunter would look real good opposite Crosby. What do you think @Public_N_M_E
As a fan of lost causes (Jets), seeing Huff go to the Eagles is painful (but at least it's not within the AFC). He's the one I wanted them keeping.
And I think it's obvious who I want the Jets cutting (the QB who isn't nearly as good as Mac Jones and can't possibly get even a sixth-rounder back). And they just resigned Zuerlein, who was probably my non-Huff keeper.

Another Jets fan? @siggy47 and @BTC_Bellzer are Jets fans too.
Any FAs you like for the Jets? What positions do you think they should target in the draft?
reply
Woo! I always assume I'm the sole Jets fan in any room (especially since I don't live in NYC anymore).
Tyron Smith is my big hope, and dear lord, we need to target the offensive line as much as possible (via draft and FA, whatever they can get). And I guess we need another good pass rusher, unless Will McDonald can really step it up.

Solid draft for OLine. I am hoping the 49ers can upgrade at C and RG

Are the Jets even aware free agency has started?
reply
That's a perpetual question!
