I've often interpretted it as cope humour for when the price crashes. I don't think many use the term seriously?
There are some common memes / opinions I really do dislike, but this isn't one of them to me.
Such as...
"This arbitrary thing that I don't like = Fiat"
"Bitcoin is only used for X% of illicit transactions."
And all the weird ties to religious conservatism, which I assume is the American cultural influence at work.
