Yes, last day of school! You read that right! I have one week of school holidays next week.
But I couldn’t be celebratory this morning because today was Awards Day and my dancers were scheduled to perform. They did all their moves perfunctorily but they didn’t seem to emanate joy. No smiles on their faces. Stiff expressions. Of course, they were 13-15 year olds. Of course, they were self-conscious and intimidated by the idea of facing so many people.
Anyway, yesterday I thought seriously about their situation and realised that they were probably scared stiff because they did not know each other well enough. When you don’t feel part of a team, it’s difficult to exert yourself and put yourself out there.
So, KL Sensei did something only he could do. Today I got them to stand in a circle and forced them to sing and dance along to the tune of “Friendship Dance” with me. It was an orientation activity very popular during my schooling days. Strangers take turns to dance and introduce themselves to each other. As they dance, the ice thaws. As they talk, they laugh. Nothing works better than laughter in eliminating anxiety.
Being teenagers, they were understandably reluctant to go along with me. But unfortunately for them, Sensei is very persistent. Finally, I elicited some laughter from them. I would like to think that I helped to make their hearts light…
Because they did perform well on the stage. My heart swelled with pride as I watched them perform, dancing their hearts out. That’s why overworked teachers stay in the profession. That’s nothing more gratifying than seeing awkward teenagers throw all caution to the wind and strive for their best. It’s a great exchange of life energy.
I am proud of them. And impressed with myself for bringing out the best in them.
