During the 1970s, North Korea acquired a thousand Volvo 144 cars from Sweden, intended for use as taxis. However, the payment was never made.

These vehicles are currently displayed in Pyongyang along with other Soviet and European cars, as well as imported luxury models and modern vehicles from China.
