I've been reading that only channel openings and closings are stored on the blockchain. If I understand correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong), the amount of space required is calculated by multiplying the number of openings and closings by the size of a typical transaction. This doesn't seem like it would take up much space. What kind of conclusions can be drawn from this data? Is the number of active channels not enough to draw the same conclusions?
This data would help estimate the real-world capacity of the blockchain to service lightning channels, nodes, and users. Active (known) channels is more like a snapshot but yes with more info on the block space this required we could place a better ceiling on how much headroom we have with current techniques.
