I've been to Napoli and gone to Pompeii at the foot of Vesuvius. But lesser known buried town of Herculaneum was star of the trip. If you're in the area it's well worth the visit.

As is Rome and Sicily too!

Also, on the subject of history I just remember hearing about all of those Roman Empire wooden posted messages, 'The Vindolanda tablets', found found near Hadrian's Wall in the UK. Easier to read, but still gave a good insight of life.
