This is the only game I allow myself to play. It's also FOSS. Free Open Source Software.
It's available for Linux, Mac, Windows and BeOS.
What I think is interesting is the money part of the game. You start off with a certain amount unless it is free play and you try to make a profitable transportation system. Just imagine if I'm the source code you put lightning in there or maybe a fediment?
I'm also interested in the visual regarding a metropolitan area. I'm totally against central planning but metropolitan or city areas and small towns might benefit from a modeling process. Maybe a citadel?
This game has network capabilities or self play.
Has anyone else played this?

ABOUT

TRANSPORT ANYTHING BY SOME MEAN

Simutrans lets you transport from passengers and mail to raw materials and consumer products through any mean of transportation. Each pakset offers a set of land, air and water vehicles to let you run your business, it can be trucks, buses, trains, trams, airplanes, ships, maglevs, monorails, it does not matter, you have the choice.
All you need to remember though, is that Simutrans citizens and products don't simply jump in your vehicles and go to wherever you send them. They actually have individual destinations: people want to check out attractions, go shopping, or visit friends. Wares also have their destinations - factories have contracts with each other and won't sell or buy from anyone else. If you don't give them the possibility to go where they want, they will not use your transport company.
Seems like the game hasn't been worked on in a while. Have you played with others?

I've only played the computer and it's hours. There is a tutorial that you can find that is helpful. Otherwise it is a little confusing on the controls.
The source code is available so I think if the money in the grand can be pegged to sats it would really be the killer game.

Did you know about https://www.openttd.org/ ? It's also open source (including open source graphics) and at one point I was helping the project too...

Yes. I've played with it. I don't like it because the tracks are all right angles and no diagonals. I've ran out on Linux. I'm sure it one has invested time there is good play. Simutrans I've played with since 2007. You can play it on an old laptop or a high end system based on the module choice.
I really think the money thing would be killer if you had a lightning wallet imbedded. You could also have a game where you set up a channel between players and settle by sending sats back and forth.
I remember a Twitter post where a guy did that with his children by playing monopoly.
If openttd has a financial element then a sats play may be implemented also.
