My dad's side was Texans (Nacadoches, Killeen, and Dallas going back to pre Civil War. We were a mix of free Blacks and enslaved.
Texas probably should have stayed a republic, but the U. S. Army would have eventually been way too big

In that era, there's a very good chance the US would have conquered Texas if it didn't join peacefully. Today though, an independent Republic of Texas could be very successful.
