A long time ago you could more or less find pirated software virus free. You still had to be on the lookout for it and find trusted sources but it isn't like it is now. Most people can't afford to take an altruistic approach with anything anymore, and piracy is no exception. Fewer people have the resources to do this comfortably while at the same time the financial incentive of backdooring your code becomes stronger and stronger.
