Janis Joplin was from Fort Arthur, Texas. She and her band, Big Brother and The Holding Company, rose to fame in the late 1960s. She died tragically in 1970. The rest of the band were just along for the ride. She was a force of nature. I love so many of her songs, but this was probably her most famous. Here's Piece Of My Heart:

Vocal fry is that raspy sounding almost hoarse addition to a vocal. It can be applied at the top of your vocal chords in an almost hissing sound. Or in a whisper shout/roar (like some screamo metal) alternatively sometimes it can be generated from the "false chords" and that usually generates a really growly boomy scream. Also used in metal.
