pull down to refresh

Alrighty! Tying back to the post I've made yesterday; I've made a list of the recommendations I've received, and ordered my first three books:

I'll start with Viktor E. Frankl's "Man's search for meaning", followed by Noah Juval Harari's "Sapiens" and finishing off with Robert Sapolsky's "Behave: The biology of humans at our best and worst" (this one im especially interested in).

I was going to order "The Righteous Mind" at first, but opted for "Behave" instead, as I feel like it'll be a tad more in-line with what I'd expect from the topic.

These three books will keep me content for a while, what are some good books to follow-up with, and what are you currently reading?

Wow! Man's Search For Meaning. I had to read that in high school. Great book.

reply

One of the best books I've ever read

reply

Yeah, looks like a solid small book.

reply

There's nothing small about it except the number of pages.

reply

Yeah, that's what I ment :)

reply

I know:)

reply

Happy to hear that we're on the same page again... 🤭

reply

I just started Book 1 of The Murderbot Diaries.

reply

Murderbot?

reply

It is a science fiction series written by Martha Wells, featuring a self-aware security robot which has hacked its own governor module and achieved autonomy. The protagonist refers to itself as "Murderbot," which is a nod to its intended function of security — often through lethal force — and its own dark humor concerning its past actions and capabilities. šŸ‘šŸ»

reply

A killer-bot with a dark, twisted sense of humor? The Dark Elder would like a talk with him... šŸ˜†šŸ˜‰

reply

Nice! I haven't read any of the first several entries on your list, so I eagerly await your reviews.

reply

They might very well come, but it'll take a fair amount of patience from your side šŸ˜‰šŸ¤£

reply

Like everyone else here, my time preference is nearly zero. So, no hurry.

reply

You make my heart blush 🄰

reply

I haven't read any of them, but I'm going to do a google search and see in detail what they're about and see if I give any of them a try, thanks!

reply

Frankl's book was a debacle for me, its written too "oldschool" and academic, it's just not for me.

reply

Not a follow up to your list, but i'm reading

Closing the Loop: Systems Thinking for Designers link

It's helpful for those who build in complexity; to zoom out and ask better questions

reply

Hm, looks like a good pick for peeps from the realm of designing.

Currently reading - Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber

reply

Yeah dude, that's going on my list for sure.

reply

Right now I am reading reminiscences of a stock market operator, very good for analyzing the behaviors that differentiate between a profitable trader and one who is not, also for understanding how to control emotions in the market.

reply

I've been inspired by this post and ordered Frankl's book as well. Looking forward to reading it

reply

Oh really, that's neat.

reply

The History of Money by Jack Weatherford, about 6 chapters in, very interesting.

reply

Awesome, I'm a bit saturated with Bitcoin and Money for now, important topics for sure, but outside my little bubble nobody seems to know or care about it... 🄲

I've got "The Price of the World" by Friedrich Lenger on my list, though.

Looks interesting, maybe something for you?

reply

Thanks, I'll check it out!

I don't think there's any bitcoin in the one I'm reading, it came out in 1998.

reply

Oehh, imagine if… hehe.

reply

I'm currently reading The Elephant in the Brain.

reply

Awesome! Look's like It's right up my alley with "Behave".

Maybe I'll read your's first, it's a lot shorter and therefore a solid starter on the topic, or so I think.
